Ward meetings are less-structured than other government meetings. They may or may not have an agenda to follow. Each council member runs their meeting differently. Usually they have a speaker or two to discuss larger city issues. There is usually a public comment period. Focus on summarizing the general discussions. President of Children’s Hospital is the main speaker and then someone is going to talk about Akron’s Tree Canopy.
When writing about public comment, only use names if you are 100% sure of the spelling. If not, you can say something like “A Wallhaven resident said…” or “A person said.” Avoid citizen, unless you know their citizenship status. Avoid gendered pronouns. “They said” is acceptable grammar.
In addition to your regular note taking, feel free to identify and elevate potential story ideas for the Signal Akron staff to pursue. These ideas could be small and focused on Ward issues or upcoming events or larger city-wide issues or events. You can put these in your notes, put them in the assignment feedback or email kevin@signalakron.org.
